ABOUT THE EVENT

Symphony Concert to Honor Local Heroes - Military Discount Offered

In a moving musical tribute to men and women who have served the greater good, the Battle Creek Symphony will present “Fallen Heroes”on Saturday, March 27, 7:30pm, at W. K. Kellogg Auditorium.

The emotionally charged concert will include Beethoven’s celebration of the heroic spirit, the “Eroica” Symphony No.3. The piece combines moments of grand triumph with a reverent second movement that has been played in memory of great men from Toscanini to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

“Hymn to the Fallen,” a hauntingly beautiful piece from the film Saving Private Ryan, is among the most popular and enduring works by composer John Williams.

Ravel’s "Le Tombeau de Couperin" is a series of dances, each dedicated to a friend of the composer who had died in World War I. Of its surprisingly sunny mood, Ravel noted, "The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence."

The concert will include tributes to Battle Creek philanthropist W. K. Kellogg on the 150th anniversary of his birth and to Pfc. Bryan R. Thomas, a Battle Creek native who was killed in action in Iraq in 2008.

Advance tickets are $7 to $45. Tickets for active or retired military or Coast Guard personnel, National Guard or Reservists are 50% off.

Call (269) 565-2199 or visit www.BattleCreekSymphony.org.

W. K. Kellogg Auditorium is located at 50 W. Van Buren Avenue.

Known for multi-media innovations and creative community engagement, the Battle Creek Symphony is Michigan's longest running orchestra, founded in 1899.
